The Beano TodayThe Modern Day Beano The Beano continues today and over 3,400 issues have been published, as of January 2009. The characters may have changed, but the majority of the long term core strips are still being created, also older characters such as Lord Snooty have been reintroduced. Furthermore, the ever-popular Beano Annual is still widely available to purchase from UK book shops. BeanoMAX This is a relatively new (launched Feb 2007) monthly comic featuring many of the same characters as the main comic, but with slightly longer stories and aimed an older audience. DC Thomspon (the comic's publisher) describe MAX as "The Beano's Big Brother". The front cover of BeanoMAX is more of a magazine format and contains content not found in the comic, such as gaming and sports tips. Nostalgia and Collectors In addition to demand from new generations of fans, The Beano is also now a popular collectable with annuals and comics changing hands at record breaking prices. In 1999 a rare first edition was sold for £6,000 beating the previous record of £2,000. However both of these prices were blown away in 2004 when another first edition was sold for £12,100.
